Oporto Attractions

The lodges of the Port Wine houses remain one of the city's most unique attractions. However, a stroll through the old city centre, now a World Heritage site, is an equally fascinating experience. The extraordinary architecture of buildings such as the Cathedral, the Clérigos Tower, São Bento Railway station and the old Stock Exchange coexists with traditional shops and trades, elegant cafés and a lively and authentic street life. The old city is also the stage for unusual and spectacular events, such as the Saint John's festival.

For the culturally minded the Serralves contemporary art museum, the Casa da Música and the city's many other theatres and galleries present a rich and varied program of exhibitions and performances by both Portuguese and international artists and musicians. Oporto is also justly famed as a city which enjoys its food and is home to some of Portugal's most celebrated chefs. The city is also renowned for its vibrant night life, with its fashionable downtown bars and the constantly changing club scene of the western districts.

Oporto is the hub of one of Europe's major clothing and fashion industries and the city's shops and malls are a magnet for shoppers.
