Barão de Vilar – Vinhos, SA is the most recent company of Port wine, established in January 1996 from a small stock of wine bought by Fernando Luis van Zeller and given to his sons Fernando and Álvaro.
The company’s institutional name recovers a noble title granted by the Queen of Portugal D. Maria II to Cristiano Nicolau Kopke, the 1st Baron o Vilar, back in 1836. The title remains in the van Zellers family’s rightful possession and inspired not only the name but the foundation upon which we build our company. Our wines combine taste and tradition, delivering in every drop the sense of legacy.
Today, we are a vibrant company with several estates in the Douro Superior and a state of the art winery in Santa Comba da Vilariça, focusing almost exclusively in the production of premium Ports (Barão de Vilar, Maynard’s, Feuerheerd’s and Tribute to Palmer) and top-level Douro wines (Barão de Vilar, Zom, Kaputt and Proeza).
The recognition of the high quality of our wines is well evidenced in the plethora of awards received in international contests (Vinalies, IWC, Decanter) and high scored wines by specialized reviewers (Wine Enthusiast, Wine Spectator, Robert Parker)
