Tapada do Chaves
The wines of Tapada do Chaves are produced in the area surrounding Portalegre in the Upper Alentejo.
For around 100 years this property has produced wines of recognised quality which are some of the best in Portugal. In view of its prime location the land possesses characteristics which are very specific and different from the rest of the region. These unique qualities are a result of the fact that the vineyards are located on the slopes of Serra de S. Mamede within a granite fault. The wines preserve the heat and mildness of the Alentejo Region. The vines are aged between 20 to 85 years of age, with the following grapes varieties: Trincadeira, Aragonez, Castelão and Tinta Francesa and white grapes of Fernão Pires, Arinto, Alva and Tamarez varieties. For a long time now the Tapada do Chaves red wine has been reserved for few, however as its high quality has gradually become better known this wine is now one of the most highly sought after by connoisseurs and admirers alike.
