The wines from this beautiful estate, perched on the right bank of the Douro in the south-eastern-most corner of the D.O.C. Vinho Verde region, are unique.
Enjoying the best of both regions - the flinty minerality of the granitic soil that characterizes the Vinho Verde region, but with the sun of the Douro valley that makes for riper, fuller wines, Covela is principally a producer of fresh, but ageable whites and floral, dry rosés.
The main grapes of the Estate are: Avesso, Arinto and Touriga Nacional.
This venerable property, with ruins of a manor house dating from the turn of 17th. Century overlooking its terraces, is dotted with woodlands and walled orchards. Its unique microclimate gives it a Mediterranean air.
For much of the 20th Century, Covela was owned by Manoel de Oliveira, one of the most important film directors of Europe. Covela is organically farmed and grapes are harvested by hand, plot- by-plot, to allow micro-vinification and precise blending.
The winemaker is Rui Cunha, who has been involved with the Covela project since its origins in the 1990s.
Our vineyards have been certified as organic.
Quinta de Covela Wines
Its vineyards bathed by the Douro’s left bank, in the prestigious São João da Pesqueira area, Quinta das Tecedeiras got its name from its "weavers” - nuns who in centuries past would weave linen from the estate’s flowers.
Launched as a brand in 2001, Quinta das Tecedeiras found international success with its robust, characterful reds, which reflect so well the terroir of this property.
North|East facing terraces make ripening more even, in this hot part of the valley.
Lima Smith took over the property in 2013 and has launched two main table wines Flor das Tecedeiras and Quinta das Tecedeiras Reserva, plus a number of special Ports.
Also in this project, oenology is led by Rui Cunha.
