It is on a plateau in Portugal, in Beira Interior, that Quinta do Cardo is located, between the protected landscape of the Douro International Reserve and the historic village of Castelo Rodrigo.
Situated at an altitude of 750 metres, this land is characterised by granite, schist, rivers, mountains, fertile valleys and an abundance of water. The name Quinta do Cardo comes from the milk thistles on the property, which were used for cheese production in Beira Interior. Their presence even today makes the farm's landscape distinctive and exuberant, in colour variations ranging from lilac to gold. The original houses and winery, located at the entrance to Quinta do Cardo, are marked by simple, colloquial architecture and strong colours. In the rest of the area we find simple dry stone buildings, such as Casa do Forno, located in the middle of the vineyard, or the small chapel dedicated to St Anthony, near Vinha da Capela. The first vines were planted in 1932 and the quality of the wines has been recognised over the years. Silence, calm and the slow passing of time mark this privileged setting. This is where some of the best Portuguese wine is produced, in a country with a wine-growing history that dates back to Roman times.
